Representation of East London through ‘Wild Bill’ (2012)

‘Wild Bill’ is Dexter Fletcher’s film about the father of two who comes back to home after eight years in prison to find his sons living on their own for almost a year after their mother left them. The older son is only fifteen but is forced to leave school and get a job in the construction site in order to take care of himself and his younger brother as he does his best not to let child care services to find out they live on their own. The younger one is a trouble: skips school and gets involved with the wrong people. Bill has no choice but to stay and take care of his sons thou it doesn’t look like a great idea at first as he barely knows them after so many years being away from home.

The movie’s main setting is Stratford and Newham, the districts in east London. It was released in 2012, the year that made this area in London worldwide known due to the Olympic Games that took place in here. Olympics is an important event that attracts people from all over the world and till nowadays Stratford is still mainly associated with the games. ‘Wild Bill’ portrays the other side of the district and gives the opposite representation from the Olympic glamour. It introduces audiences with the harsh reality of people who struggle with money or kids who have no one to take care of them. The main protagonists in the film gets involved in the fights, drug dealing and it gives negative impression of east London and Stratford in particular. Most of the male characters in the film are either criminals, drug addicts or teenagers not interested in education. Meanwhile female characters are young single mothers or prostitutes. It gives the stereotype of this particular place as dangerous and filthy but at the same time proves that people can change like turning from the criminal into a caring father and that sometimes people should not be judged from their appearances or surroundings.

‘Wild Bill’ introduces the viewers with the harsh reality and shows the other side of London, such a popular and admirable city for its culture and royalty.

Dexter Fletcher, the director of the movie, says: 'It was important for me to make a film about London as it is now.' More of his comments can be found here:
